Little Big Bang Poem by Liv Torc

This is the poem written by our documenting performance poet Liv Torc, inspired by The Bigger Bang Symposium and The Little Big Bang project. It was written in a few hours at The Bigger Bang on April 9 and performed at the end of the day in front of a very appreciative audience.

Little Big Bang

They say the Universe began
With just one atom
Or at least something very small
Full of fizzing potential
But all too easy to ignore.

They say a whole person
Begins with just one sperm
And just one egg
While great ideas begin
With a little fire in the head.

Little things go unnoticed all the time
Atoms, ideas, sparks, children, rhyme
Ripples in water
Wind through cloth
The patterns of light
That pool on plastic
The snap and twang
Of stretched elastic
The hidden rhythms
That serenade each day
The tiny dents
Made by fingerprints in clay.

In these little moments
Whole universes are born
To live and die
Never seen by those
Who keep their noses held up high
In the ‘extraordinary’ sky.

These Universes appear
In the inspiration
A child might feel
As they turn the intergalactic wheel
To reveal…
The most important thing in all creation
That wide life giving
Friendly place
Known as SPACE.

And in that Space the planets spin
All different in their imaginings;

There’s an ordinary planet
Full of ordinary things
Where everyone believes
That they can draw and sing
There’s a planet
Made of mud and string
And big deep holes
To peer within.

There’s a planet
Where everyone knows your name
And they like to play
Very messy games.
There’s a planet
With no shoes at all
So people just roll and laugh
Upon the floor.

There’s a planet where every child
Is given an equal right to create
Which makes them
And their families less irate
And somewhat great.

And all these planets spin
Inside of that Space
Held in a loving warm embrace.
The Space that you’ve all incubated
The hot bed of potential
You have facilitated
Where children are free
To explore the Universe
THEY have created.

We hear its magic
In the stories that they tell
The jokes they make
And how they learn from each mistake
We see how creativity and the Arts
Play a vital, crucial part
In the forming of a human
Head and heart.

Because of this
We feel the excitement
Of their Universe unfolding
Their songs still waiting to be sang.
Which we know at least in part
Were forged in the sparks
Of projects like…
Little Big Bang.
