To mark the anniversary of 50 years of Nigerian Independence and Black History Month, the nationally acclaimed theatre company Eastern Angles will be bringing their hugely entertaining, quirky and moving new play Palm Wine and Stout to three Somerset venues.
October 21, 22, 23, Minehead, Westbury-sub-Mendip and Ditcheat
The 19-stop UK tour, which has recently been publicised on Radio 4, will make its first outing into Somerset on Thursday 21 October at the Regal Theatre in Minehead, moving to Westbury-sub-Mendip Village Hall, near Wells on Friday 22 October and completing its county-wide tour on Saturday 23 October at Ditcheat Jubilee Hall near Shepton Mallet.
This new play, written by award-winning playwright Segun Lee-French, is a very funny portrayal of the writer's own trip back to his father's homeland with his white mother. Relatives, customs and music combine to present a theatrical journey that will amuse and entertain anyone who has explored their own family history and had to examine their assumptions and expectations.
Segun Lee-French said: "Palm Wine & Stout is the story of the strangest years of my life. Most of what is depicted onstage actually happened, but is seen as reflected through a long hall of very warped mirrors. Normally, I don't write autobiographical theatre, but when Theatre Writing Partnership, Eastern Angles and New Perspectives requested ideas for scripts for rural touring, this was the only story that was begging to be told."
The Director of Take Art‚s Rural Touring programme Sarah Peterkin said, „We just couldn‚t let Somerset miss out on this extraordinary show that promises to be a terrific evening out, resonating with anyone who has ever been part of a family.‰
