Young people benefit from an extraordinary ticket offer!

Take Art are very pleased to announce the success of the ‘A Night Less Ordinary’ free ticket scheme for Under 26s, which has been running in Somerset since September 2009.

Traditionally village touring has always attracted an older audience, so ‘A Night Less Ordinary’ was set up by the Arts Council England to encourage young people to access the theatre and music shows taking place within their communities.

Over the last two years, Take Art has given away 300 free tickets to young people aged between two and 26, for an enormous range of high quality professional shows, including:

  • Two Gents Productions performing Two Gentlemen of Verona
  • Pickled Image performing Wolf Tales
  • Eastern Angles with their amazing performance Palm Wine & Stout
  • Canadian Susanna Hamnett performing her one-woman show Nearly Lear
  • Danish band Ro:toro in concert
  • Award winning comedian Alex Horne with his latest show Wordwatching

To maximise the potential of the free ticket scheme, Take Art worked closely with countywide organisations such as Somerset Young Carers and Promise Mentors. This meant Take Art was able to invite young people who might not previously have had the opportunity to visit the theatre, and for whom the cost of tickets was prohibitive to them attending theatre events.

Director of Take Art Live Sarah Peterkin said, “This free ticket scheme has introduced a good number of young people to positive examples of professional theatre in their local communities. Over the coming year, Take Art will be developing a new way of working with these groups to ensure the continued attendance and enjoyment of such events.”

The Take Art Live Spring Season launches on 15 January 2011 and is packed with exciting and amazing shows for children, adults and families. Thanks to the ‘A Night Less Ordinary’ free ticket scheme, we are confident the young people who have seen shows for free over the last two years will continue to enjoy professional shows in their local communities.
