Tide and Time

Tide & Time was a unique project that ran from 2005/2006 and brought artists and communities together to explore the rich diversity of the South West coast and sea.

The sea has protected Somerset in times of war; offered trading routes to the world; provided a rich source of food and resources; attracted tourists and holiday-makers; it has given us challenging sport or peaceful contemplation. Most of all, it has inspired our artists, musicians and writers.

The project offered emerging and established artists, residents and visitors around the South West coast the opportunity to consider our constantly changing relationship with the sea. The effect of second homes, fishing quotas, stone quarries, clay mines, oil extraction, environmental changes, tourism and information technology and the affect on our coastal communities.

Exploring the rich diversity of this coastal landscape, the projects included dance, new writing, film, visual art, digital arts, sound walks, music, singing and also interesting collaborations between artists.  From Crab Walking in Babbacombe to a choir singing newly written songs on Portland, Time and Tide gave people ways to discover our coast as never before.

With thanks

With funding from the Arts Council and a variety of other organisations Tide & Time was developed by four arts organisations in the South West - Take Art in Somerset, Villages in Action in Devon, The Works in Cornwall and Artsreach in Dorset.
