20 March 2025

Great Mead Pilot Project Launched in Chard

A new initiative featuring nature, creativity, food and well-being activities for people to share together was officially launched in Chard, South Somerset, on 5 March 2025.

The Great Mead Pilot, a 10-month project, focuses on the early stages of transforming a 6.4-acre area in the heart of Chard into a welcoming and vibrant space for all the local community to share and enjoy together. Through a series of nature-based activities, creative workshops, and community events, the initiative will encourage people to connect with their environment and each other to explore and test a range of new ideas for creating a safe, inclusive and sustainable space of beauty and diversity.

The official launch event was attended by the Head of Holyrood Academy, Chard’s Mayor, Somerset’s High Sheriff, and the Deputy Lord Lieutenant. Students from Holyrood Academy also participated, showcasing their involvement in the project.

A Project for the Community, by the Community

The Great Mead Pilot is a collaborative effort involving multiple local organisations, including Connect Somerset, Holyrood Academy, Chard Town Council, Take Art, Chard Community Hub, Somerset Wildlife Trust, ARK at Egwood, and WATCH CIC. With a strong foundation of partnerships, the project aims to leave a strong legacy for future generations.

Speaking at the launch, the Deputy Lord Lieutenant and High Sheriff of Somerset highlighted how the initiative aligns with the King’s vision of using nature and open spaces to benefit communities, particularly in deprived areas.

"His Majesty is incredibly keen on nature and open spaces being used for the benefit of the community. And this fits the bill perfectly."

Deputy Lord Lieutenant

The High Sheriff praised the community-led approach, saying: "It's so typical of Somerset: local towns take control of their own destiny. This fantastic project will make a real difference to people in Chard, It will be the heart."

What’s Coming Next?

Over the next ten months, the project will host a variety of events, including:

  • Nature walks to explore the site;
  • Training workshops on tree and water management, forest skills, and nature surveys;
  • Creative sessions in poetry, music, and art
  • Outdoor cooking activities.
  • A festival in September and a sharing event in October.

A family-friendly performance of "Shed-Ache" by Somerset’s aKa Dance Theatre Company has already been confirmed for Saturday 24th May.

The project is supported with funding from Somerset Community Fund, the National Lottery Community Fund, and the European Horizon Connect NEB programme, a prestigious grant awarded to just ten projects across Europe.

With strong community support and exciting plans ahead, the Great Mead Pilot promises to be a transformative initiative for Chard.
