Brand-new dance project launches in June

10 June 2021

With huge thanks to Somerset County Council, we’re delighted to announce that we’ve been given funding for a brand-new dance project for people living with dementia, and their carers.

Our Turn is a two-year arts intervention using dance and movement to help the health and happiness of vulnerable adults living with dementia or memory loss.

Using daytime activities to deliver vital emotional and physical support to people living with memory loss and dementia, the project will support the building of relationships in the home and the community, enabling greater social interaction and an improved quality of life.

These weekly dance sessions - led by specialist dance artists - will help:

  • Support falls prevention
  • Improve physical and mental health and wellbeing
  • Reduce loneliness and isolation
  • Provide carers with respite

The sessions will take place at Ilchester Town Hall on Tuesday afternoons from 1:30pm – 4:30pm and will include a falls prevention dance session, meet and greet and social time with refreshments. We have been working in partnership with Somerset Partnership and SPARK Somersetand have also received input and guidance from the Community Mental Health Team at Magnolia House to help shape the project.

Our Turn is classed as an alternative day time service and will feature on Somerset Community Connect for participants to use their direct payments towards, should they wish. Anyone can attend the dance sessions providing they have received or are in the process of receiving a diagnosis of memory loss or dementia.

To showcase what you can expect, we’re offering a taster session on Tuesday 29 June at Ilchester Town Hall. If you’re interested in attending, please email nadine@takeart.org by Monday 14 June to confirm your place. Due to current restrictions places may be limited so we would advise to book early to avoid disappointment.

If you’d like to find out more about the project but are unable to attend the taster session, we can also offer an informal Q+A at a time that suits you.
